Chelsea youngsters revolution

Chelsea FC

Partly because of their transfer ban, and partly because of Frank Lampard’s philosophy, Chelsea have seen their youngsters shine in the Premier League this season which sees them in an impressive fourth in the table.

Tammy Abraham, who has been a part of the club since joining at the age of seven, enjoyed all the emotions of a footballer on his first senior appearance for Chelsea.

The striker, awarded with the number nine shirt ahead of the season, made his debut from the bench in the 2019 UEFA Super Cup against Liverpool, winning a penalty in extra-time from which Jorginho scored to level the scores at 2-2 and eventually send the match to penalties.

And in that same script, it was that man Abraham who had all the pressure on him at the age of 21 with the deciding penalty at 5-4. Up he stepped, all eyes - and cameras - on him...and he drives the ball low but soft, for Adrian to become the hero and save with his right leg.

However since then, Abraham has been in almost everyone’s fantasy team in the Premier League, scoring nine goals in 11 appearances. His first against Norwich City in a 3-2 away win, and just a month later a hat trick in their 5-2 success over Wolverhampton Wanderers to become the youngest player to score three goals in a match for the club in the Premier League era. He alone may be worth the price of a Chelsea ticket as a rising star.

Another highlight from Chelsea’s youngsters is Mason Mount, who Lampard clearly identified as a strong player in the game, securing a new five-year deal for him in July 2019. With four goals in the competition so far, Mount made his senior international debut for England just weeks after making his Chelsea debut, showing the trust some of the most-respected managers in the game have in the 20-year-old.

Elsewhere, a teenager Lampard has much faith in is Reece James, who proved why just recently. The right-back came off the bench to become Chelsea’s youngest ever Champions League goal scorer at the age of just 19, with his fine strike in the 74th minute of the second half sealing a 4-4 draw with Ajax in the group stages of the competition.

Other names include 21-year-old Fikayo Tomori and 18-year-old Callum Hudson-Odio, who have 25 appearances between them.

One for Chelsea fans to keep an eye out for is 19-year-old Conor Gallagher, who is currently on loan to Charlton Athletic in the Championship. The midfielder is impressing at the Addicks, with five goals in 15 appearances.

Some doubt may ponder as you question the pressure on these youngsters, but its long term strategy can only be a success as the players get the exposure to some of the best football in the world. For now, it’s incredible to see the journey of Chelsea and what their young squad can achieve.
